Case Study
Digitalization and, in particular, predictive approaches are increasingly finding their way into locomotives and wagons. We have developed a telematics system based on a high-performance computer for a multi-system locomotive in the 90-ton class for an OEM.
The computer (certified to EN 50155) receives all information from the vehicle network (Ethernet), processes it internally and acts as a data memory. Diagnostic data can be processed onboard, but can also be transferred to backend systems. At the same time, the system performs the function of a diagnostic tester, as known from the automotive industry. Many diagnostic data can be read out either remotely or by the technician on site, even while driving.
Comprehensive cybersecurity concepts were implemented to ensure that the safety of the locomotive is not compromised at any time. The system has a multi-level firewall, intrusion detection and is encapsulated within itself. This means that there can be no direct access from the land side to sensitive systems such as the vehicle network, control units, ETCS, etc. on the rail vehicle.
Secure connections have been developed on the land side for data exchange, including an OTA update. A connection to common fleet systems, such as Railnova (R)are possible without restriction.
The development was based on the standards IOS/IEC 32443, TS 50701, EN 50155, EN 50128 / EN 50129 and the client was accompanied through to certification.
