Case Study

Telematics systems are becoming increasingly important in the vehicle industry. They create considerable savings potential for fleet operators, especially in truck and bus fleets. However, such interfaces between the land side and vehicles also harbor the risk of being attacked by hackers.

Cybersecurity concepts were developed for a new telematics unit for a major manufacturer of commercial vehicles and implemented by the system supplier. We created a tiered security architecture that independently detects and reports attacks on the telematics unit and therefore on the vehicle.

This system would also make it possible to expand the existing backend and create a central point for detecting attacks on the fleets, i.e. according to the principles of SIEM.

One of the advantages is that it is completely encapsulated from the vehicle bus so that diagnostic measures (OBD) can be carried out easily.

Concepts were created and the architecture developed for the client. In addition, penetration tests were carried out together with another service provider and the security architecture was accompanied through the homologation process and certification in accordance with the principles of ECE and ISO 21434.
